Last week, the Future Harvest Partnership Project team had the opportunity to visit Yellowknife, to attend the TAA's GROW Conference, where they engaged with local growers and listened to attendees expressing their visions for the future in the region's agrifood sector. From Wednesday to Saturday, the team met with farmers, producers, and community leaders to share insights, discuss challenges, and identify opportunities for collaboration to strengthen the local food system. Wednesday evening, Dr. Debora Van Nijnatten, a co-investigator on the project, made a presentation at the Tree of Peace Friendship Centre, explaining the concept of net zero policy and it's implications for the north, alongside the executive director of the Arctic Energy Alliance, Mark Heyck, and Ben Israel of the GNW. Over 70 community members attended the presentation. A recording will be made available in the coming weeks. At the GROW Conference, Dr. Andrew Spring, Principal Investigator, made a presentation explaining the Future Harvest Partnership project to conference goers, emphasizing the project's objectives of: strengthening the network of communities and growers, understanding net zero and its implications for northern food systems, researching land suitability and availability, supporting farmer-led research, and working with consumers and producers to put their future visions into an action plan. This visit marks an important step in the project’s ongoing efforts to foster sustainable agriculture, improve food security, and create long-term partnerships in the North. The team looks forward to continuing these conversations and working together to build a resilient and thriving agrifood community in the territories.
